In 1871, Mount Vulcan erupted and gradually pushed the town of Catarman — including its cemetery — into the sea. Today the cemetery sits 6 meters underwater, marked from the surface by a large white cross planted on a small island offshore.
You can snorkel or dive among the remaining tombs. Coral has grown over the headstones, and small fish dart between the stones. The visibility is excellent and the depth is shallow enough for beginner snorkelers. Local boats will take you out from the shore for PHP 200-400 round trip.
The white cross on the surface island is itself a viewpoint — you can walk up to it and look out over the water. It's eerie and beautiful in equal measure.
Most visitors combine the Sunken Cemetery with nearby Catarman Church Ruins — the ruined Spanish-era church that was also destroyed in the 1871 eruption.
