Mt. Apo is the highest peak in the Philippines and one of Southeast Asia's iconic climbs. The summit at 2,954 meters sits between Davao del Sur and North Cotabato provinces, with multiple trails of varying difficulty leading up.
The standard climb is 3-5 days depending on route. The Kapatagan trail (from Davao del Sur side) is the most popular and well-organized. Climbers usually camp at Lake Venado on night 2 — a high-altitude crater lake with reflections of the summit at dawn.
The summit area is volcanic — sulfur vents, scarred rock, and a barren landscape unlike anywhere else in the Philippines. On clear mornings, you can see the curvature of Mindanao's coastlines.
Required: a registered guide (mandatory by local regulations), a climbing permit from the Department of Environment, decent gear for cold nights (summit temperatures can drop to 5°C), and physical preparation. Several local outfitters in Davao organize complete packages — expect PHP 7,000-12,000 per person.
