Halo-Halo de Iloko is a small dessert shop in San Juan that has become a mandatory stop for anyone visiting La Union. It serves the most famous version of halo-halo (the Filipino shaved-ice dessert with mixed sweet toppings) in the region — distinguished by its high-quality, locally-sourced ingredients and traditional Ilocano twist.
A standard order includes shaved ice, sweetened beans, jellies, sago pearls, sweet corn, langka (jackfruit), ube halaya, leche flan, ice cream, and evaporated milk. The Iloko version adds carabao milk and local Ilocano honey instead of standard sugar syrup, giving a deeper, less aggressively sweet flavor.
The cost is PHP 130-200 per bowl. The shop is small, with limited seating — expect to wait during busy weekend afternoons (especially in summer). Many travelers take it to go and eat on the beach.
Beyond halo-halo, the shop sells local Ilocano specialties: kalamay (sticky rice sweet), tupig (grilled sticky rice cake), and various jellies and jams. Combined with a beach session, this is the perfect summer afternoon stop.
