Calle Crisologo is the reason Vigan is on UNESCO's list. A single cobblestoned street lined with 16th-19th century bahay-na-bato (stone houses) on both sides, it's the most intact stretch of Spanish-Filipino colonial architecture remaining in Asia.
The houses are characteristic mestizo architecture — stone ground floors (storerooms, stables), wooden upper floors with sliding capiz-shell windows, ornate balconies, and steep tile roofs. Many are still owned by descendants of the original Spanish-Filipino merchant families.
The street is closed to motor vehicles. Kalesa (horse-drawn carriages) ply the cobblestones for tourists — PHP 200-300 for a short ride around the historical district. Most travelers find walking more pleasant; the street is only 500 meters long.
At night, the street lights up beautifully — lampposts in colonial style, soft yellow glow, almost no people. Eating dinner at one of the heritage-house restaurants and walking the street afterward is the perfect Vigan experience.
