The complete Bacolod travel guide

When to visit Bacolod

Bacolod's dry season runs November to May. The most pleasant months are December to February (cooler, 22-30°C) and October — when the famous MassKara Festival takes over the city. The MassKara is THE reason most international tourists visit Bacolod — held annually in the third weekend of October, it's the Philippines' most photogenic festival with parades of dancers in elaborate smiling masks.

If you plan a MassKara visit, book hotels 3-4 months ahead. Outside of MassKara, Bacolod is quieter — March-April still works for visiting the Ruins, Silay heritage houses, and Don Salvador Benedicto's mountain coffee plantations.

How to get to Bacolod

The Bacolod-Silay International Airport (BCD) handles multiple daily flights from Manila (1 hour) and Cebu (45 minutes) via Cebu Pacific, PAL, and AirAsia. From the airport to Bacolod city is a 45-minute drive. From Iloilo, the fast ferry across the Guimaras Strait takes 1 hour (PHP 400-600) — popular with people doing a combined Bacolod-Iloilo trip.

Where to stay in Bacolod

Downtown Bacolod (around the Provincial Capitol) is the most central area — walkable to Manokan Country (the inasal restaurants), shopping, and main attractions. L'Fisher Hotel, Park Inn by Radisson, and Seda Capitol Central are popular mid-range options. Megaworld's Upper East District has newer hotels in a planned commercial area. For a different experience, Silay City (30 minutes north) has heritage-house B&Bs for a slower, more atmospheric stay.

The MassKara experience

The festival spans 3 weekends in October, building up to the Grand MassKara Parade on the closest Sunday to October 19. Beyond the main parade, expect: MassKara Beer Plaza (huge outdoor beer garden), Electric MassKara Run, food festivals, and dozens of side events. Hotel rates increase 2-3x during festival weeks; the city of 600,000 swells to over 1 million during peak weekend.

Getting around Bacolod

Tricycles are the standard local transport (PHP 30-100 within the city). Grab works in Bacolod but driver availability is more limited than Manila/Cebu. Jeepneys run main routes for PHP 13-20. For day trips to The Ruins in Talisay (30 minutes), Silay (30 minutes), or Don Salvador Benedicto (1.5 hours up mountain), hire a private car or take buses from Ceres Terminal.

What to eat in Bacolod

Bacolod is a foodie city. The signature dish is chicken inasal — try the original at Manokan Country, the cluster of 12+ family-run inasal stalls near the public market. For dessert, Calea Pastries and Coffee is famous nationally for its cakes (no exaggeration — many Filipinos consider it the best). Bob's Restaurant has been serving Bacolodnon classics since 1967. Aida's Chicken Inasal is a more polished chain. For piaya (flaky brown sugar flatbread) and napoleones (millefeuille pastries), visit Merzci or El Ideal Bakery in Silay.

Practical tips

  • "City of Smiles": The local culture lives up to it — Bacolodnons are notably friendly.
  • Manokan Country eating: Eat with your hands (Filipino-style). Mix calamansi and soy yourself. Order pecho (breast) for lean or paa (thigh) for juicy.
  • The Ruins night visit: After 6 PM the lighting transforms the ruins — book ahead for evening entry.
  • Silay heritage tour: Most heritage houses are open 9 AM-5 PM. Photography is welcome; many houses are still family-owned.
  • Combine with Iloilo: The 1-hour ferry makes a 2-city trip easy. Both cities have distinct food and culture.
