When to visit Cebu
Cebu enjoys a more consistent climate than many Philippine destinations because it sits between the rain shadows of neighboring islands. The dry season runs December to May, with the most pleasant weather January to April. The wet season (June-November) brings afternoon showers but rarely all-day rain, and many travelers find this time perfectly fine — fewer crowds, lower prices, and the famous whale sharks of Oslob and thresher sharks of Malapascua are year-round.
The Sinulog Festival in January (third Sunday) transforms Cebu City — one of the largest religious festivals in Asia. Book hotels 2-3 months ahead for festival dates.
How to get to Cebu
Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB) is the Philippines' second-busiest airport. Multiple daily flights from Manila (1 hour), plus direct international flights from Hong Kong, Singapore, Tokyo, Seoul, Bangkok, Dubai, and more. From the airport, taxis to Cebu City take 30-60 minutes depending on traffic — use Grab (the local Uber equivalent) for fixed fares.
From within the Philippines, 2GO ferries connect Cebu with Manila (overnight), Cagayan de Oro, Iloilo, and more. Fast ferries from Bohol take 2 hours; from Dumaguete, 3-4 hours.
Where to stay in Cebu
Cebu province is huge — your accommodation choice depends entirely on what you came for. Mactan Island (where the airport is) has the resort beaches — Shangri-La Mactan, Movenpick, Crimson — perfect for beach holidays with airport convenience. Cebu City itself is for business travelers, shoppers, or those using it as a hub. The IT Park and Ayala Center areas have most international hotel brands.
For the southern attractions (Oslob whale sharks, Kawasan Falls, Moalboal sardines), stay in Moalboal or Badian. For the north (Malapascua thresher sharks, Bantayan Island), use those island bases. Many travelers stay 2-3 days in Mactan, then move south or north.
Getting around Cebu
Cebu City has Jeepneys (PHP 13-20), taxis (Grab works well), tricycles, and the new BRT system. To explore beyond the city, hire a private car with driver (PHP 3,500-5,000/day) — much faster than buses for visiting multiple beaches in one day. The Ceres bus from Cebu South Bus Terminal goes everywhere south (Oslob, Moalboal) at PHP 150-250.
What to eat in Cebu
Cebu is the home of lechon — whole roasted pig with crispy skin and herb-stuffed belly. Anthony Bourdain famously called Cebu lechon "the best pig ever." Try Rico's Lechon (multiple branches) or House of Lechon. Other Cebuano specialties: puso (rice steamed in woven coconut leaves), danggit (dried fish for breakfast), ngohiong (Cebuano spring rolls), and the famous Cebu dried mangoes you'll find in every souvenir shop.
Practical tips
- Grab works well: Use it for all city transport. Cash and card both accepted.
- Whale shark ethics: Oslob whale shark interactions are controversial — the sharks are fed to stay. Some travelers prefer the natural sightings at Donsol (Sorsogon) instead.
- Diving certification: Cebu has the cheapest dive courses in the Philippines. PADI Open Water typically PHP 16,000-22,000 including 4 days and certification.
- Distances are deceiving: Cebu is a long, narrow island. Driving the length takes 5-6 hours. Plan accordingly when booking activities.
- Tipping: Not expected but appreciated. 10% in nicer restaurants, round up for taxi drivers.

Frequently asked questions
Should I stay in Cebu City or Mactan?
Mactan Island has the beach resorts and is closest to the airport. Cebu City has the urban scene, restaurants, and is the gateway to southern day trips like Oslob and Moalboal.
Is the Oslob whale shark experience ethical?
It's controversial. The whale sharks are fed daily to keep them in the area, which affects their natural behavior. Many travelers choose to swim with whale sharks at Donsol (further north, no feeding) instead. Read up before deciding.
How do I get to Moalboal from Cebu City?
About 3 hours by bus from the South Bus Terminal. Buses run every hour. Some hotels arrange private transfers for PHP 2,500-3,500.
Can I do a day trip to Bohol from Cebu?
Yes — fast ferries to Tagbilaran take 2 hours. Long days though. Better to stay 1-2 nights in Bohol to see Chocolate Hills and Panglao beaches.
