When to visit Iloilo
Iloilo's dry season runs November to May. The most pleasant months are December to February — cooler (24-30°C), low humidity. January brings the Dinagyang Festival in the fourth weekend — Iloilo's biggest tourism event, with parades of "tribes" in elaborate Ati-warrior costumes performing choreographed dances. Book hotels 2-3 months ahead for Dinagyang weekend.
March-May is dry but hot. June-October sees afternoon rain but rarely all-day washouts. The mango season runs March-June, when Guimaras mangoes are at their best.
How to get to Iloilo
Iloilo International Airport (ILO) handles multiple daily flights from Manila (1 hour) and Cebu (45 minutes) via Cebu Pacific, PAL, AirAsia. The airport is 30 minutes from downtown Iloilo. From Bacolod, the fast ferry across Guimaras Strait takes 1 hour (PHP 400-600). From Caticlan/Boracay, ferries cross via Estancia, Iloilo (longer route).
Where to stay in Iloilo
Iloilo Business Park is the modern commercial district with most international hotel brands — Courtyard by Marriott, Seda Atria, Richmonde Hotel Iloilo. The location is convenient but a bit far from the heritage districts. Diversion Road area has more mid-range options. Downtown (around Plaza Libertad) is closer to the old Molo and Jaro districts where most heritage attractions are — fewer international hotels but more local color.
The Iloilo formula: heritage + food + Guimaras
Most travelers do a 3-day Iloilo itinerary: Day 1: Old town heritage tour — Molo Church, Jaro Cathedral, San Joaquin Church, Mansions of Calle Real. Day 2: Food and city life — La Paz Public Market for batchoy, Camiña Balay Nga Bato heritage house, SM City. Day 3: Guimaras Island day trip — 15-minute boat ride to mango farms and beaches.
For longer stays, the heritage town of Miag-ao (1 hour south, UNESCO-listed church) and Sicogon Island (private island resort) are popular extensions.
Getting around Iloilo
Iloilo has Grab (works well), jeepneys (PHP 13-20), and a unique local taxi service. The city is more spread out than Bacolod, so taxis or Grab are practical. For Guimaras day trips, take a tricycle to Ortiz Wharf (PHP 50-100), then the 15-minute pump boat (PHP 30 per person). On Guimaras, tricycles or rented scooters cover the small island.
What to eat in Iloilo
Iloilo is a foodie destination — the cuisine has more depth than people expect. The famous trio of Iloilo food: La Paz Batchoy (egg noodles in pork-bone broth topped with crispy chicharon — try Ted's Old Timer La Paz Batchoy or Deco's), pancit Molo (Filipino wonton soup, named after the Molo district), and KBL (kadios-baboy-langka stew — black beans, pork, jackfruit). Don't miss biscocho (toasted bread snack) from Biscocho House or Original Biscocho Haus. For seafood, the Iloilo River esplanade has excellent dining spots.
Practical tips
- Dinagyang ticket viewing: Most travelers watch the parade from sidewalks (free). Paid grandstand seats give better views but require advance purchase.

- Heritage walks: Wear comfortable shoes — Iloilo's heritage districts spread across a few kilometers.
- Combine with Bacolod: The 1-hour ferry makes a 2-city heritage-and-food trip easy.
- Iloilo is bike-friendly: The Iloilo River esplanade has 11 km of dedicated bike paths.
