When to visit Camiguin

Camiguin's dry season runs November to May with the most reliable weather February to May. The famous White Island sandbar looks its absolute best on clear, calm days — these are most common in March-April. October brings the Lanzones Festival, a colorful local celebration of the fruit harvest, but also some rain. June to September sees daily afternoon rain but never reaches the destructive level of typhoon belt islands.

The island is sheltered by Mindanao to the south and rarely takes direct typhoon hits.

How to get to Camiguin

Two practical options. The faster: fly directly to Camiguin Airport (CGM) via Cebu Pacific or PAL from Cebu or Manila — limited flights but the easiest option. The cheaper and more common: fly to Laguindingan Airport (CGY) in Cagayan de Oro from Manila or Cebu (multiple daily flights), then take a 1.5-hour van to Balingoan port, then a 1.5-hour ferry to Benoni port on Camiguin. Total travel time from CDO: about 4 hours.

Where to stay in Camiguin

Mambajao is the main town and the most convenient base — close to White Island boat launches and the hot/cold springs. Agoho Beach just outside Mambajao has several beachfront resorts including Camiguin Volcan Beach Eco Retreat and Dive Resort. Yumbing is another beach area popular with divers. Mantigue Island itself has very limited overnight options — most visitors do it as a day trip.

Camiguin's accommodations are generally smaller and more rustic than typical beach destinations. Don't expect international hotel brands.

The standard Camiguin itinerary

Most visitors stay 3-4 nights and follow a similar pattern: Day 1: White Island (the iconic sandbar) and Sunken Cemetery. Day 2: Mantigue Island (snorkeling, white-sand beach). Day 3: Waterfalls and springs tour (Katibawasan Falls, Tuasan Falls, Sto. Niño Cold Springs, Ardent Hot Springs). Day 4: Diving or beach day. The island is small enough to circumnavigate in a day by motorbike (64km loop).

Getting around Camiguin

Renting a scooter or motorcycle (PHP 400-600/day) is the standard way to explore — the island has a single coastal road and traffic is light. Tricycles cover shorter hops (PHP 50-200). Multicab (mini-van) hires can take you on full-day tours for PHP 2,000-3,500. Jeepneys also circulate but routes are infrequent.

What to eat in Camiguin

Camiguin is famous for lanzones (a sweet tropical fruit) — harvest season is September-November and lanzones from Camiguin are considered the best in the Philippines. Try fresh seafood at any of the beach barbecue stalls in the evening. Macro Hotel Restaurant and J&A Fishpen Restaurant are popular. The hot/cold springs have basic food stalls. Don't miss pastel — a soft bun stuffed with custard, similar to but not identical to Camiguin's famous neighbor Camiguin's CDO pastel.

Practical tips

  • White Island has zero shade: Reef-safe sunscreen, hat, and water are essential.
  • Sunset trip to White Island: Boats run special sunset trips around 4 PM — fewer crowds than the morning rush.
  • ATMs: Mambajao has a handful. Bring cash for the rest of the island.
  • Diving: The Old Volcano dive site (around the Sunken Cemetery) is a Philippines bucket-list spot — historic ruins underwater.
  • Volcano hikes: Mt. Hibok-Hibok requires permits and guides — arrange through your accommodation.
