Batangas
Manila's weekend beach and dive destination.
Just 2-3 hours from Manila, Batangas covers Anilao (one of the world's top macro-diving spots), Laiya beach, Mt. Batulao, and the ferry port to Mindoro and Boracay. It's where Manila escapes to on weekends.

When to visit Batangas
Batangas's dry season runs November to May. For diving Anilao, the calmest seas and best underwater visibility are December to April. For Mt. Batulao hikes and Tagaytay/Taal trips, the cooler months of December to February are most comfortable. March to May is hot but still good for beach days at Laiya. June to October brings afternoon rains but rarely all-day washouts — and Manila weekenders thin out, making it cheaper.
Avoid Holy Week at Laiya, which becomes Manila's overflow beach during Easter.
How to get to Batangas
From Manila, the STAR Tollway via SLEX takes 1.5-2 hours by car to Batangas City or Tagaytay. By bus, JAM Liner, ALPS, and DLTB run from Cubao or Buendia to Batangas Grand Terminal (2-3 hours, PHP 200-300). From there, jeepneys and vans reach specific destinations:
- Anilao: bus to Mabini junction, then jeepney to Anilao Pier (1 hour total)
- Laiya: bus from Batangas to San Juan (1.5 hours), then tricycle to Laiya beaches
- Tagaytay: separate bus route via Aguinaldo Highway (2 hours from Manila)
Where to stay in Batangas
Your activity dictates your base. Anilao (Mabini) for diving — clusters of dive resorts near Anilao Pier. Laiya (San Juan) for beaches — La Luz Beach Resort, Acuatico Beach Resort, and various mid-range options. Tagaytay (technically Cavite but accessed from Batangas) for cool mountain weather and Taal Volcano views — The Lake Hotel, Taal Vista Hotel, and many B&Bs. Calatagan for the upscale resort scene (Punta Fuego, Stilts).
Anilao diving
Anilao is famous globally for macro diving — tiny critters like nudibranchs (200+ species), pygmy seahorses, frogfish, mimic octopuses, and ghost pipefish. The diving here is technical and visual rather than wide-open reef. Per-dive prices: PHP 2,000-3,500 with gear and boat. Most dive resorts include 2-3 dives daily plus meals in package rates (PHP 4,500-8,000 per person per day all-inclusive).
Getting around Batangas
Within Anilao, accommodations are spread out and tricycles handle transport (PHP 50-200). Within Laiya, beach resorts have shuttle service to local restaurants. For visiting Mt. Batulao trailhead in Nasugbu, hire a private car (PHP 2,500-3,500 round trip) — public transport is inconvenient.
What to eat in Batangas
Batangueño cuisine has distinct specialties. Bulalo (slow-cooked beef shank with bone marrow soup) is the iconic dish — try it at Mahogany Market in Tagaytay for the most authentic version. Lomi Batangas is the local noodle soup — thick, garlicky, hearty. Goto Batangas (rice porridge with tripe) is the comfort food. For coffee, Batangas grows excellent kapeng barako — try it at Bag of Beans in Tagaytay.
Practical tips
- Taal Volcano restrictions: The volcano island remains off-limits since the 2020 eruption. View from Tagaytay only.
- Diving certification: Anilao is excellent for advanced courses (photography, deep diving, nitrox).
- Mt. Batulao timing: Hike in dry months only (Dec-May). 5 AM start to avoid heat.
- Weekend traffic: Manila weekenders make Friday afternoon and Sunday evening drives painful. Plan accordingly.
- Bring cash: Anilao and Laiya have limited ATMs.
