The complete Malapascua travel guide

When to visit Malapascua

The defining factor is thresher shark diving, which works year-round but is most reliable in calm seas. The best months are October to May, with March-May offering the calmest crossings and clearest underwater visibility. December to February can be windy. June to October sees typhoon risk — Malapascua took a direct hit from Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) in 2013 and has since rebuilt. Plan around typhoon season.

The thresher sharks themselves come to Monad Shoal every dawn year-round — they don't migrate. Sightings rate is consistently around 95%.

How to get to Malapascua

From Cebu City, take a bus or van from Cebu North Bus Terminal to Maya Port at the northern tip of Cebu (4 hours, PHP 200-300 by Ceres bus or PHP 350-500 by van). From Maya Port, take a public banca boat to Malapascua (30 minutes, PHP 100 per person, runs roughly every hour during daylight). Total travel time from Cebu Airport: about 5-6 hours.

Many dive resorts offer door-to-door transfers from Cebu Airport for PHP 1,500-2,500 — well worth it for the convenience.

Where to stay in Malapascua

The whole island has just a few accommodations — almost all clustered along Bounty Beach on the southern coast. Top dive resorts: Evolution (popular with serious divers), Tepanee Beach Resort, Malapascua Exotic Island Dive Resort, and Ocean Vida. Budget travelers stay at hostels behind Bounty Beach. Almost every accommodation has an on-site dive shop and offers dive-and-stay packages.

The thresher shark dive

The dive happens at Monad Shoal, 30 minutes by boat from Malapascua. Dawn dive — boats leave at 4:30-5 AM. You descend to 25-30 meters and hover near the "cleaning stations" where threshers come to be groomed by smaller fish. Advanced Open Water certification is required minimum due to depth.

If you only have Open Water, many dive shops on Malapascua offer the Advanced course (typically 3 days, PHP 14,000-20,000) so you can earn the certification and do the thresher dive on the same trip. Single thresher dive: PHP 2,800-4,500. Multi-day dive packages drop the per-dive cost.

Beyond thresher diving

Other dive sites include Gato Island (cave dives, bamboo sharks, sea snakes), Kemod Shoal (manta rays seasonally), and Lapus Lapus (macro). Non-divers can: walk to the lighthouse for sunset (20 minutes), snorkel the protected areas off Bounty Beach, do a day trip to Kalanggaman Island sandbar (1.5 hours by boat, PHP 2,500-4,000 per person).

Getting around Malapascua

The island is tiny — 2.5 km long, 1 km wide. You walk everywhere. There are a handful of motorbikes for rent (PHP 400-600/day) and a few tricycles, but most travelers find they don't need transport at all. The main "road" is a concrete path wide enough for one motorbike.

What to eat in Malapascua

Bounty Beach has 15-20 restaurants and bars covering Filipino, Italian, Indian, and Western cuisines. Angelina serves excellent Italian. Craic House Irish Pub is the lively evening spot. Maldito has good cocktails and tapas. For Filipino food at local prices, the small carinderias behind the beach serve adobo, sinigang, and grilled fish for PHP 100-200 per meal.

Practical tips

  • Bring cash: Malapascua has just 1-2 small ATMs that frequently run out. Withdraw enough in Cebu before traveling.
  • Power outages: Daily for 1-3 hours. Most resorts have backup generators.
  • Wi-Fi is slow: Don't expect to work remotely. Buy a Globe or Smart SIM card.
  • Single SIM coverage: Most of Malapascua has signal from one major carrier. Test before traveling.
  • Combine with northern Cebu: Bantayan Island and Malapascua make a great combined trip — both reached from Cebu's north.
