The complete Siargao travel guide
When to visit Siargao
Siargao has two distinct seasons. The surf season runs August to November when the swells come in — this is when Cloud 9 reaches its iconic 6-12 foot heights and the international surfing competition happens (usually September). The flat season is March to July — calmer surf for beginners, sunnier skies, and the best conditions for island-hopping to Naked Island, Daku Island, and Guyam Island.
December to February can be windy and unpredictable — sometimes excellent surf, sometimes flat, sometimes too windy to surf at all. June and early July are sweet spots: beginner-friendly waves, dry weather, fewer crowds. Avoid late October and early November when typhoons occasionally affect the island.
How to get to Siargao
Fly to Sayak Airport (IAO) on Siargao directly from Manila (1.5 hours), Cebu (1 hour), or Davao (1 hour). Cebu Pacific and PAL run multiple daily flights. From Sayak Airport to General Luna (the main tourist area) is a 45-minute van ride (PHP 300-500 per person via shared van; PHP 1,500-2,000 private).
The ferry route from Surigao City (mainland Mindanao) is the budget option — 2-3 hours, PHP 350-800. Combine with overland travel through Cagayan de Oro for the long but cheap journey.
Where to stay in Siargao
General Luna (GL) is the main tourist hub — restaurants, bars, surf shops, hostels, and mid-range hotels. The town beach is a quiet stretch. From GL, you reach Cloud 9 (10 minutes), Sugba Lagoon, and most other attractions easily.
Cloud 9 itself has a cluster of surf hostels and mid-range hotels right next to the wave — perfect if surfing is your priority. Pacifico (north of GL) and Burgos are quieter alternatives popular with longer-term visitors. The luxury escape: Nay Palad Hideaway on a private island, one of Asia's most expensive resorts.
The Siargao tours
Three classic day trips: Island-hopping to Naked, Daku, and Guyam Islands (PHP 1,500-2,500 per person with lunch). Sugba Lagoon tour to the famous turquoise lagoon and floating cottages (PHP 1,200-1,800 with stops at Tak-Tak Falls and Magpupungko Rock Pools). Sohoton Cove — a longer day trip to a stunning lagoon system with a jellyfish lake (PHP 2,500-4,000).
For surfers: Cloud 9 is the main wave but advanced only. Beginners learn at Jacking Horse or Quicksilver — surf lessons PHP 500-800/hour including board. Many surf camps offer multi-day packages with accommodation.
Getting around Siargao
Renting a scooter is the standard way — PHP 350-500/day including helmet. The roads from GL to Cloud 9, Pacifico, and the lagoons are paved and pleasant. Be cautious of sandy patches and rural traffic. Tricycles work for shorter hops (PHP 30-100). For airport transfers, pre-book with your hotel.
What to eat in Siargao
Siargao's food scene has exploded in the last decade. Bravo in GL does excellent Mediterranean. Kermit serves Italian wood-fired pizza. Shaka Cafe is famous for acai bowls and surfer breakfasts. For Filipino, try Gusto Cucina and Pleyadas. The Saturday GL market has the freshest seafood and fruit.
Practical tips
- Environmental fee: PHP 100 per person paid on arrival.

- Mosquitoes: Siargao has them year-round. Pack DEET repellent.
- Scooter safety: International license technically required. Wear helmets. Don't drink and ride.
