Barracuda Lake
A dive site with a famous thermocline.
Barracuda Lake is a dive site unlike any other in the Philippines. The lake sits behind a steep cliff — you climb up and over with your dive gear to descend into the water. The lake has a dramatic thermocline: the water gets warmer the deeper you go, going from 28°C at the surface to 38°C below 14 meters.
The lake's depth is 35+ meters and the limestone walls are sheer. There's almost no marine life (one juvenile barracuda gives the lake its name; rarely seen now), but the underwater scenery — rock formations, the unusual temperature change you can physically feel — makes it memorable.
It's a popular advanced dive site. Several Coron dive shops include it in dive packages. PADI Open Water certified divers can typically dive it, though the unusual conditions make it a good choice for Advanced Open Water training dives.
Non-divers can swim and snorkel on the surface, but the lake's appeal is really for divers experiencing the thermocline.
