Samal Island

Davao's beach island, 15 minutes by boat.

Samal Island

Samal Island (officially the Island Garden City of Samal, or IGACOS) sits in the Davao Gulf — a 30-minute drive from Davao City to the ferry port, then 15 minutes across the water. The island is large (over 300 km²) and has dozens of beach resorts catering to local Davao weekenders.

Pearl Farm Beach Resort is the most famous luxury option — a high-end resort with overwater villas styled after Samal traditional houses. Rates start around PHP 25,000 per night. Hagimit Falls and Monfort Bat Cave (home to 1.8 million fruit bats) are popular non-beach attractions on the island.

For day trippers, public beaches like Talicud Island (a small island just off Samal) and Kaputian Beach offer powdery white sand at much lower prices. Cottages can be rented for PHP 500-1,500 per day.

The contrast with Davao City is significant — within an hour you can go from a coastal urban center to an island that feels deeply provincial and slow-paced. A weekend on Samal is the standard escape for Davao residents.
