Urbiztondo Beach

La Union's main surf beach.

Urbiztondo Beach

Urbiztondo Beach in San Juan, La Union, is the surf heart of the province — a 2-kilometer stretch of dark gray sand and consistent beach-break waves that have made it the most popular surfing destination in northern Luzon.

The waves are beginner-friendly by international standards — small, slow-breaking, and forgiving. Multiple surf schools line the beach offering lessons. A 2-hour group lesson with board rental runs PHP 500-800. Private lessons are PHP 1,000-1,500.

The beach itself isn't a swimming destination — the water is darker than tropical resorts and the surf doesn't really make for casual swimming. People come here to surf, to drink, or to watch others surf. San Juan Surf Resort, Flotsam & Jetsam, and Kahuna Beach Resort are the recognizable beachfront names.

The strip along Urbiztondo is dense with cafés, surf shops, and bars. Night life is laid-back — bonfire vibes, acoustic music, easy drinking. The town has a distinctively chill personality compared to Manila — even getting up to surf at 6 AM feels relaxed here.
