Millions of sardines just off the beach, year-round.

The Sardine Run in Moalboal, Philippines

Moalboal's sardine run is one of the most accessible wildlife spectacles on Earth. Millions of sardines form massive swirling bait balls just 20-30 meters offshore from Panagsama Beach — close enough to swim out to with basic snorkel gear.

Unlike sardine migrations elsewhere in the world, Moalboal's sardines stay year-round. The ball constantly shifts shape — sometimes a tight column, sometimes a spreading curtain that wraps around you as you swim through it.

Snorkeling is the easiest way to see them — the sardines are shallow enough that you don't need to dive. Visibility is best November to May (20-30m).

Dive shops on Panagsama Beach offer guided sardine dives for PHP 1,800-2,500 including gear and boat. For snorkeling, simply walk to the beach, rent gear from any vendor, and swim out.
