Chocolate Hills

The Chocolate Hills are a geological oddity — 1,268 nearly identical conical hills, each 30-50 meters high, spread across 50 square kilometers of central Bohol. The hills are covered in grass that turns chocolate-brown in the dry season (March-May), giving them their name.

Theories on their formation involve uplifted coral deposits and ancient marine limestone. The exact origin remains debated. Geologically, there's nothing else like them in Southeast Asia.

The main viewpoint is the Chocolate Hills Complex in Carmen — a hilltop with 360-degree views over the formation. There's a 200-step staircase to the top and a small viewing deck. Less crowded is the Sagbayan Peak viewpoint, which has fewer tour buses but a similar view.

Best visited at sunrise or late afternoon when the light makes the hills more dramatic. Midday is harsh and flat. The hills are at their most "chocolate" in April; in rainy season they're green.
