In Bohol, Visayas
Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary
World's smallest primate, found only in the Philippines.
Tarsiers are tiny nocturnal primates — about 15cm long including the head, with enormous eyes that are bigger than their brain. They exist only in a few parts of Southeast Asia, and Bohol is the easiest place to see them in the wild.
The Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary in Corella is the ethical place to visit. It's a research facility on tarsier habitat where the animals live freely but are habituated to quiet observation. Strict rules apply: no flash photography, no touching, no loud noises (tarsiers stress easily — they can die from sustained stress).
Avoid the unofficial "tarsier viewing" tours that grab the animals to pose with tourists. The Loboc tarsier viewing center has been criticized for poor animal welfare.
The visit takes 30-45 minutes — you walk a marked path while guides quietly point out tarsiers in trees. The animals are mostly motionless during the day; you watch them sleep or open their eyes occasionally.
